About CAREonline

The Consortium of Adventist Higher Education (CAREonline) was initiated by the Adventist Association of Colleges and Universities as a partial response to the 2017 Future of Adventist Higher Education Summit which highlighted the need for collaboration in support of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church. The consortium’s initiatives have led to two main methods of course sharing. One initiative entails working with the Acadeum platform for course sharing. The second initative is listing courses that can be taken and transferred back to the student's home institution.

Two Consortia: CAREonline and CIC

Andrews University students can now enjoy more online courses through either CAREonline or the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Consortium, both accessed through the Acadeum platform. In addition, Andrews University holds bilateral consortial agreements with other institutions, also access through the Acadeum platform.

How it Works for Andrews Students

Approved consortium classes earn Andrews University in-residence credits. This means they are part of your Andrews University course load, billed at your campus tuition rate, and paid through your financial plan.

Classes are currently registered for you by Global Campus and Records (not through Registration Central), so please follow these steps to enroll:

  • Discuss adding a Consortium class with your academic advisor first.  Enter keywords and use filters in the Acadeum course search to narrow options to two or three.
  • Check that the class fits within your course load for the semester selected. As many Consortium classes are completed in 5 to 8 weeks, plan for a lighter load of full-semester classes to fit this intensive in to study time and your financial plan.
  • Once you have weighed up all the options, email your academic advisor your commitment. Your advisor then emails the the approved class information (course title, teaching institution name, start and end date selected) to Dr Glynis Bradfield in Global Campus.
  • If the class is offered by another department, that department chair will be contacted by Dr Bradfield if this or a similar class has not been previously approved.
  • Once student, advisor, and department chair approvals are received by Dr Bradfield via email, the student is enrolled manually into a 960 section, the course appears in the semester schedule in IVUE and on your financial record. Emails confirming the registration will come from both Andrews and the Teaching Institution.
  • Read emails from the Teaching Institution, to set up access to their learning management system, complete any orientation, and purchase any study materials before class starts.
  • Note the start and end dates for the Consortium course, as they will likely differ from Andrews semester dates. You are responsible for meeting Teaching Institution deadlines, and communicating using the contact information provided.
  • Communicate with the course instructor to clarify any learning activities, ask for tutoring or tech help, and to note any unforeseen changes that impede your progress.
  • If you feel withdrawal is necessary, review the withdrawal policy which should be included in the syllabus and/or the course space. You will complete the Andrews drop/add form, get your academic and financial advisor's signatures, the Dean's signature if after the drop/add deadline for the semester. Attach the signed form to an email to academicrecords@lubosh.net, copying Dr Bradfield who will get the drop done with the Teaching Institution. You do NOT need the instructor's signature. Refunds are available for the first few days only, and vary by institution offering the course. 

Students may choose to take class through other colleges and universities by applying directly with that university as a non-degree, guest or transient student. There are times when this can save time and money and access classes not offered at the time through either CAREonline or the CIC Consortium.  Complete the Andrews transient student request before enrolling to ensure the credits will transfer as desired.
